You Are Not Your Mistakes // A Home Decor Series

Sometimes I can't stop thinking, thinking about all the mistakes I've made.
The things I've done or said that I shouldn't have.
The times I should have spoken up.
The times I should have taken the higher road or made a different decision.

Sometimes I feel like my mistakes have driven my life.
That they have defined who I am today and had the power to direct me.

This series is all about healing.
About letting go of mistakes and chalking them up to lessons.
About realizing I, you, we are human.
About reminding myself that those lessons I have learned are what propelled me forward and allowed me to make some incredibly wonderful and incredibly right decisions.

Each of these babies start from silver from previous mistakes.
Pieces that didn't work.
Solder and ideas that didn't flow.
Melted bezels and broken saw blades.

I've melted them all down to their elements.
Turned them into lessons, and used them to grow something new and beautiful.

I can't tell you how healing it is.
To be able to turn that torch up to screaming high and just let the heat burn away your mistakes.
Let it melt it down until it's no longer recognizable.
Until you've forgotten how painful it was when it happened.

Cast succulents.
Shed antlers.
Weathered cow vertebrae.

To adorn your home.
To remind you.

Woman Up //

And just when you feel yourself settle into comfort,
just as your muscles are able to relax,
just as your soul feels settled....

Reach strongly for something beyond your fingertips.
Desire the challenge.
Seek it out.
Grab it confidently with both hands.

Don't drag it behind you or carry it haphazardly.
No, pull the weight of that sucker square onto your shoulders.
Strive to make the new discomfort manageable and then eventually make it look effortless.

Because woman, you are the most beautiful when you bravely and vulnerably tumbling forward in pursuit of life.
When you are answering the question, what am I capable of?

I want to know the strength of this body... and this soul.
I want to know I can wo-man up to any challenge.
I want to feel uncomfortable in contentment, and twitchy when I'm still.
I want to see the vastness myself and therefore also my boundaries.

And most of all I want to break them.

---

Guys I've been pushing myself hard lately. Stretching and reaching for more in almost every aspect of my life. It's super exciting, but it also feels incredibly overwhelming.

I keep wondering if I'm capable to rise to the challenges I've laid out for myself.
I keep asking if I'm really capable of what I hope for.

And I keep trying to remind myself that this is who I am. That I am a strong capable woman, and I've rose to every challenge before this. That I've built this business up with just these 2 hands.
I keep trying to remember I've taught myself these skills before, and I'll keep trying to do it again and again and again.

No matter what.

Progression // A Shop Update

This past year I've really taken notice of the community around me.

I played a small part in a the "Cab it Forward" project in which fellow smithies pass on stones to one another as a sign of support, I made a few friends during my first smithing classes, and I've reached out to some fellow artists that I really admire.

All this to say, the community is real. And I'm happy to be a part of it.

I imagine us as a giant robot, my fellow artists and me. Each of us playing a part, but needing to work together as a whole to function properly. And I think of the structure built to hold this art community up. The bones and the frame on which we stand. Built bolt after bolt by those that came before us.

Entrepreneurs,
boundary pushers,
artists.

And I bow to their bravery and creativity.

This summer, after studying up on some more traditional native american work, I fell in love with silver in a way I hadn't before. A deeper more intense relationship with the metal. I was inspired by the way the silver pieces and forms nestled the stone. Making a sanctuary for it to thrive, and highlighting it's natural beauty.

I, the apprentice, really wanted to pay homage to those master's work. So after tinkering with it a bit, my "In Tradition" series was born. A thank you to all the artists who went before me.  A realization of all their sweat and tears that went into their work.

While making the "In Tradition" series, I felt as though I was embodying the masters, and in ways emulating their moves. The swings of their hammers, the chattering of their saws, the grinding of their files.  But what was born of this process was something more than that, something completely my own.

And so, although this leaf shape was born out of replication, I can't rightfully package it the same. It no longer belongs in the "In  Tradition" series, where my heart was looking to the past.

These leaves, might take the same shape, but they were born out of individuality and progression. They look to the future.

They are a mark, my mark, my bolt in the art community robot.

Until someone else builds upon this work, and together we move in unison.

Hope to see you there!

Totems

Traditionally totems are thought of in terms of their spirit.
Guiding us with their unique personalities through this life.

A raven's slyness.
An orca's wisdom.
A bison's strength.

But the biologist in me wonders about their physical form.
Why and how they came to be.

This Earth, the ultimate sculpturist, carving these animals.
Shaping their bodies.
Making each species unique and special allowing them to find a small space in which for them to belong.
Forming them to fit just perfectly within a small niche.
A crack of space on this crowded planet.

The pressure, uncomfortable, but necessary.
Pushing and pulling them until their forms are just right, and as soon as the niche changes or moves, reshaping them.
Never tiring of perfecting their bodies.

The ocean waves undulating over the whale.
Smoothing it's skin.
The current stretching and elongating it's body and forming fins powerful enough to resist it.

The strong winds, blowing through the bones of the raven.
Hollowing them and allowing the bird to take flight.
Creating space for itself amongst the clouds.

I imagine the plains where the bison roams carving a body strong and robust.
Built for endurance and survival.
Shaping a head harder than the limestone grounds in which it travels.

I think about our journey through this life.
The uncomfortable, but also necessary pressures that we experience.

No longer subject to evolution, our bodies are precise yet clumsy.
Instead these pressures, if we are open to receiving them, shape our heart and mind.
The parts of us that are still malleable.
Soft like putty.
Changing daily.

Instead of the land shaping us it's our experiences, our perception and our reactions.

I've come to be a unique being because of these experiences. Similar to my peers, yet different enough to be myself.
Just like Darwin's finches, I fit a particular niche, a place in this world just for me.

I don't know about you, but that my friends in comforting.

So I will sit in my space that is meant for no one else,
and I will be.

Sipping From My Bold, Full Bodied Life.

As I sit here drinking my coffee, swinging in my lovely hammock, and taking in the fresh air slightly tinted with hints of last night's campfires. The laughter and happiness from yesterday still permeating  the surroundings. I take in all of this and I just can't help but be grateful.

Today,
this week,
this month,
this year,
this time.
It's a shy step from perfection.

I look at every facet of my life right now and I couldn't be happier.

First and foremost my family.

A beautiful, energetic, intelligent, funny, happy and healthy little boy for a son. There are days when I wonder if I was cut out for motherhood, but what I don't wonder is how much he has brought to my life. How happy I am to spend even a blip of this existence together. He's taught me so much already and it's fulfilling beyond measure.

A husband who I don't have the words to describe. A being who is worthy of so much more than I can offer, yet graced me with his love and unchanging devotion. A love indescribable in depth already, and the possibility of it growing over this journey together blows my mind.

A bigger, more glorious family that would take years to write about, but I'll name a few.

A mother who has taught me about dedication and somehow taking care of everyone and everything and herself. A father who gifted me his passion and drive that has brought me to where I am today. A sister who has shown me resilience and determination. A grandmother who has shown me true kindness and generosity. Wisdom of generations, my grandfather has provided me with so many tools for my work and for this life.

Friends, so many.
Some have gone, some I've yet to meet.
Some will stay forever.
The laughter, the guidance, a bond and sisterhood I couldn't get along without.

A home.
A place to call ours.
To put our most prized possessions in.
The backdrop to our story.
And most important, a retreat after our endless adventures.

Work, if I can even call it that.
Something so special it barely feels like work at all.
Challenging yet fun.
Something I built with my own 2 hands, and the ability of it to be flexible as I grow and change.
I know I have so much more to do here.
So much more to put out, to show you, I'm excited for what is to come.

All of these things right now in this moment, and some I failed to mention.
My heart is full.

These are the best years of my life.

These are the times I want to remember.

I need a special place to keep the memories.
An album if  you will.
Or maybe just a maker in time to remember this.
All of it, how it is and how it feels.

Cups to store them in.
Small ones at first, and bigger ones when I realized the littles just wouldn't hold all the memories I'm making.

Softening Within the Stretch

I find myself in this place for many reasons.
I've chosen this life, but it also chose me.

My ability to push myself.
To drive forward.
To learn.
It's the mode of transportation that got me here.
I set the destination, but this ability drove the way.

I now know, this is something unique and special.
I have used it to get to this beautiful place.
A place where I can make with my own two hands.
Where I can create day in and day out.

But this, this is not always a gift.

For the past week or so, I've shut down the torch at the end of the day empty handed.
I turn off the lights and close the door tight behind me in hopes of forgetting the frustrations of the day.

I submerge myself in family.
In conversation about anything but the studio.
I play games with my son.

Yesterday was the worst.
I left the studio feeling broken.
The lowest of lows.

Working on a project that is so outside my comfort zone brings so much frustration.
So much self doubt.

Searching for answers, I came across something magical.

"My advice to you is to soften into the discomfort. Accept it. Know that it's gifting you growth, fuel, and grit.  Whatever it may be that you're claiming this year as your desire and dream, I wish you the comfort within the discomfort. The stillness within the unease. The softening within the stretch. And mostly, I wish you the match that lights and revives the fire to keep you going. Because you can. Keep going."

And it was just what I needed.

And so today, I took a step back.
I realized that I do have walls and limits.

We all do.

But they are not permanent.
These boundaries can move, but with slow gentle pushes.
Deep breaths and mindful movements.

It's how I got here, and it's how I'll get to the next level and the next.

I'll never be stagnant.
It's not in me.

But I will be good to myself along the way.
Keeping my body and spirit in mind.

I won't ask myself to do too much.
But also not too little.

And I hope you do too.

Because of Lemons

A year ago, I sat knees tucked tightly underneath me, forehead to the floor, balled up tight and rocking ever so softly back and forth.
The news that he was gone sliced through me like a razor sharp knife.
The fresh wound bleeding a river of tears.

As we laid him to rest, I remember just hoping time would somehow move faster. Wishing I could put some distance between the loss and find time for my wound to heal.

I really thought that the next year would bring answers.
Answers to so many questions swirling in my head.

At the time, I remember asking myself the how's and the why's of it all.
How it happened.
What his day was like.
Maybe I felt like if I could paint a clear picture I would somehow come to understand it all.

But in these 365 days I haven't answered any of these questions.
Sure I know a little more, but ultimately I stopped trying to find the answers. I think the questions somehow grew to seem superficial to me.
Maybe I realized even those answers weren't enough.

In their place, much bigger questions took root.
Things like, why does sadness even exist?
Why are we capable of feeling it?
Why does sadness matter?

I really believe everything has a purpose.
Nothing in this world is a waste. Every moment has meaning, at least if we let it.

So what is the purpose of sadness and grief?
What is the purpose of feeling so bad?

As we approached the anniversary, this has really been weighing heavy on my mind.

And I keep pondering this....

WOULD A PEACH TASTE AS SWEET WITHOUT THE EXISTENCE OF THE BITTER LEMON?

If we had never experienced that sharp piercing bite and had nothing to compare it to, would a juicy ripe peach seem dull and bland?

I'm not here to down play the sadness.
There are days when my body, my mind, and my heart need it.
Sadness is a part of life, but if in some way we can recognize something positive or even create something positive from something so tragic, does it give the lemon more meaning?
Does it now have purpose?

Without sadness in our lives, it's easy to perceive the daily goodness as dull and boring. It's easy to only see the negatives in our life and drowned out the positives.

Loss and sadness can add perspective.
Allow us to see how wonderful we really have it.
How grateful we should be for every day life, and how we shouldn't take it for granted.

The doldrums of daily life tastes as sweet as a fresh, ripe, fragrant peach on a hot summer's day, after you've had a bit of life's bitter lemons.

So go on friends, look up from your sadness, and see what life has to offer.

Homechum

Maybe this is the story of my life.
Maybe it's the story of the salmon.
Maybe it's both.

I say I've lived in this magical place my whole life.
A place where the snowy mountains meet the sea.
Where the trees create a landscape so green and so thick it's hard to see past it.

To be honest, growing up, I wanted nothing more than to leave.
At the time, this place felt too small for the gigantic dreams I wanted to fill. I felt suffocated and trapped.

As a young adult, I only saw what this place couldn't offer and none of what it could.
I saw it's downfalls and little potential.
Mostly, I think my body had changed and so had my heart.
I was no longer that little fry that needed the protection offered by the stream.
I was ready to explore.

I first tried the luscious views of Upstate New York. I landed as the golden deciduous trees were dropping their leaves.
Almost as far away from this home as possible, I was eager to adventure.
I wanted to see who I was away from everything I had known.
I was ready to test my crazy thoughts and theories on the unsuspecting world.

New York was beautiful.
This is really where I fell in love with hiking.
Gushing waterfalls.
Fingerlakes.
I tasted it all.

And for a moment I felt happy.
No,
I was happy.

The space, that's what I needed at the time.
To explore.
To experience.
A new adult in a massive ocean.

I left the Atlantic, only a few years later to find myself again in the North Pacific,
but this time in Alaska.
A place as gorgeous, if not more than home.
The land full of texture and color.
Spewing life from every pore.
I saw majestic white belugas dancing their way through the Cook Inlet.
I played on ice cold blue glaciers.

And to this day I will tell you that I long to go back to where the spit extends a mile from the land. Narrow as ever, just enough land to call it a place.
Saltwater surrounding you, but where it misses, the gap is filled in by snow capped peaks.
Halibut a story tall, hung up and ready for eating.
Homer, AK is in my heart.

But all these sights I've seen.
Places I've lived.
Memories I've made.
They were never home.

The moment I leave this place, the Pacific Northwest, and step out on a new land, may it be long term or even for a short trip, I immediately feel called home.
My body feels unsettled, almost visibly shaky.
Something is out of place,
I am out of place.
My mind often wanders, and I find it thinking about home.

I guess that's how I know.

Funny how understanding works sometimes, learning by trial and error.
You spend your whole life experiencing where you don't belong, only to realize all you needed you had all along.
Where you started.
Where it all began.

And so, like a spawning salmon answering a call from within.

Not a conscious thought, but rather something deeper.
A story written on their DNA. Bound to happen because of who they are.
Just like the chum, returning to the stream to spawn, I return home.

And when my feet are firmly planted on this ground, gone away is the restlessness.
In it's place a calming sense of peace.
A huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
Home brings an overwhelming sense of belonging.

And now, when I look up and see that glorious mountain peeking over the horizon, I believe it's mine.
And in return, I am it's.
We belong together.

The same for my ocean.
The same for my home.
