Homechum

Maybe this is the story of my life.
Maybe it's the story of the salmon.
Maybe it's both.

I say I've lived in this magical place my whole life.
A place where the snowy mountains meet the sea.
Where the trees create a landscape so green and so thick it's hard to see past it.

To be honest, growing up, I wanted nothing more than to leave.
At the time, this place felt too small for the gigantic dreams I wanted to fill. I felt suffocated and trapped.

As a young adult, I only saw what this place couldn't offer and none of what it could.
I saw it's downfalls and little potential.
Mostly, I think my body had changed and so had my heart.
I was no longer that little fry that needed the protection offered by the stream.
I was ready to explore.

I first tried the luscious views of Upstate New York. I landed as the golden deciduous trees were dropping their leaves.
Almost as far away from this home as possible, I was eager to adventure.
I wanted to see who I was away from everything I had known.
I was ready to test my crazy thoughts and theories on the unsuspecting world.

New York was beautiful.
This is really where I fell in love with hiking.
Gushing waterfalls.
Fingerlakes.
I tasted it all.

And for a moment I felt happy.
No,
I was happy.

The space, that's what I needed at the time.
To explore.
To experience.
A new adult in a massive ocean.

I left the Atlantic, only a few years later to find myself again in the North Pacific,
but this time in Alaska.
A place as gorgeous, if not more than home.
The land full of texture and color.
Spewing life from every pore.
I saw majestic white belugas dancing their way through the Cook Inlet.
I played on ice cold blue glaciers.

And to this day I will tell you that I long to go back to where the spit extends a mile from the land. Narrow as ever, just enough land to call it a place.
Saltwater surrounding you, but where it misses, the gap is filled in by snow capped peaks.
Halibut a story tall, hung up and ready for eating.
Homer, AK is in my heart.

But all these sights I've seen.
Places I've lived.
Memories I've made.
They were never home.

The moment I leave this place, the Pacific Northwest, and step out on a new land, may it be long term or even for a short trip, I immediately feel called home.
My body feels unsettled, almost visibly shaky.
Something is out of place,
I am out of place.
My mind often wanders, and I find it thinking about home.

I guess that's how I know.

Funny how understanding works sometimes, learning by trial and error.
You spend your whole life experiencing where you don't belong, only to realize all you needed you had all along.
Where you started.
Where it all began.

And so, like a spawning salmon answering a call from within.

Not a conscious thought, but rather something deeper.
A story written on their DNA. Bound to happen because of who they are.
Just like the chum, returning to the stream to spawn, I return home.

And when my feet are firmly planted on this ground, gone away is the restlessness.
In it's place a calming sense of peace.
A huge weight lifted off my shoulders.
Home brings an overwhelming sense of belonging.

And now, when I look up and see that glorious mountain peeking over the horizon, I believe it's mine.
And in return, I am it's.
We belong together.

The same for my ocean.
The same for my home.

These pieces were dreamt up while I was away.
They were sketched and the ideas solidified while I was on a plane soaring towards home.
They were forged right where I belong.

An understanding of exploration.
A gift of belonging.
A celebration of home.

Married to the Forest Cuff

The woods are lovely,
dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

There Was That One Time.

There was this one time.

My friend kidnapped me and took me to a magical place.

Not so far away, yet it seemed worlds away.

It was magical.

Peaceful.

Full of life, and love.

And there was a dog named Merlin.

And we laughed.
We enjoyed each other's company.

And we just live.

Enough said.

Under the Quiet Moonlight Series

The end of the year is always a quirky time.

Everything is so final.

The close of the busiest time of the business season.
The end of a big month.
The end of a year.

Yet, at the same time, it's the beginning.
A fresh start.
A new beginning.

I get quiet during this time.
I feel myself drawing inward.
My heart retracing the year and the moments that defined it.

I always feel as though the business goes on a slight hiatus while I'm resetting.

This time reminds me of those chilly Pacific Northwest nights.
Pitch black, but the moon in all it's glory lighting the way.

In that space it's easy to feel as if nothing is happening.
The earth is so quiet.

But if you slow enough to pay attention you'll see.
Beneath the quiet exterior, so much is happening.

Animals awaking to the night.
Coming to life under neath the quiet stillness.

This time is necessary for the earth to succeed.
In the same, this time is necessary for me to succeed.

The quiet brings time to reflect, and find truth.
Just as you notice signs of life around you.
Chirps of animals.
Scampering little feet.

The fog as you breath out.

This is when big things happen.
You awaken to the sunlight, with big bold energy for the day.

Don't underestimate the quiet.

Life is Always Preserved //

I woke up in the middle of the night with a faint idea in my head.

My best ideas always seem to arise when I'm sleepy.

A blurry image of a circle of life. A basic idea introduced in elementary school, but the details of the concept are also very complex. My dreamy mind can barely wrap my head around it.

As I come into consciousness, the idea develops. A predators and prey. A wolf, the top most predator of the forest and his prey.

As I blink my eyes open a few times, the desire to create it grows stronger and more details be come clear.

The layout and final images appear before me.

I know I can't ignore the pull. I must answer it's call.

My body is tired, but it surrenders to the creative spirit.

I'm out of bed now, and find myself bundling up as I head down to the studio. Toting with me nourishment and tea.

As I saw away I find my mind drifting back. To my childhood, to my young adulthood.

I was always terrified of death. Something about the loss of life. The last few moments, and the finality of being. Death always tortured me. Friends, pets, wildlife that have passed flashed before my eyes.

I feel my shoulder stoop lower.

My posture loosen.

My head hang.

I am consumed by the death before me.

As I continue sawing rabbit, then hawk, then wolf, I came to an epic realization.

IN THE SANCTITY OF NATURE,
LIFE IS ALWAYS PRESERVED.

No matter the prey, the being is providing life to the next. An energy transfer if you will. The life itself cannot be taken. It cannot be created nor destroyed in this moment.

Instead one soul feeds the next.

No small drop, no tiny piece is forgotten. All is used in nature.
Consumed by a predator or detritivore.

As life pours from one being to the next, no drops are lost.

And that is beautiful.

Wall hanging available here.

A Northwest Nature Moment

I get a lot of crazy ideas.

Most of them never work out.
But some do.

If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably noticed these amazing nature inspired almost mandala pictures. I've been really into creating them. I'm loving every aspect of them, from collecting the elements to setting them up to photographing them.

The emotional release of the imagery is almost cathartic.

Recently I got one of my crazy ideas.

To video the set up, stop-motion style.

Not only did it work, but the idea grew into something so much more amazing than I could have ever hoped for.

I got the opportunity to include work from an amazing, local singer/songwriter. We've been admiring each other's work for years, and this opportunity to include Allison Preisinger's work couldn't be passed up.

I hope you love it!

Earn Your Wings

Proud doesn't begin to describe how I felt the past few days.

About a week ago, as we approached Kaleb's 7th birthday, I asked him what his goals were, what he wanted to be when he grew up, anything he wanted to accomplish over the next year.

His immediate response was, "I want to parachute."

And so, because we will do anything to make his dreams come true, we took him indoor skydiving.

He was the youngest one there by far, yet his fearlessness put him years beyond anyone in his group. I was amazed by his ability to go with the flow, follow instructions, and do something new on his own.

As a parent, you hope that they flourish in this crazy life. The things I've seen from him in the past few weeks have blown me away. He'll go so far, and I'm so grateful to be able to stand by him on this journey.

Here's a few shots of my little champ flying.

Home

I've been eyeing a new cameral lens for awhile now. Pondering the exact right one to get. Taking lots of pictures everywhere I go, and experimenting with what I wish my current lenses were capable of doing.

A few weeks ago I narrowed down my choice to the Tamron 17-50 2.8

For those of you that are newer to the photography field, this lens is very similar to the lens that comes with the purchase of your camera body, called the kit lens.

It is heavily debated if purchasing the lens is worth it considering their similarities. However for me, it's the idea of purchasing canned peaches vs. driving to Eastern Washington and picking them fresh during their  peak. No doubt in my mind, the quality and sharpness of the new lens was so worth it.

I'm so lucky to live in such a beautiful place, that as soon as the mail man delivered it, I ran out to snag these shots.

The inspiration around me is so saturated with beauty, color, and form. I can't wait to bring this back to the studio!

Abundance //

I can barely hear my thoughts.
It's so loud now.
It's hard to hear anything but the rain drumming down on the rich green earth, as I sit on my porch sipping tea.

Millions of tiny drops, each with their own unique sound. As they pitter patter away, they meld together like a choir singing its most powerful ballad.

The noise is deafening, but beautiful.

I'm focused on the rain now, as the wind blows a few stray drops towards me. Several of them landing on my uncovered face.

They are colder than I expect. Piercing my skin with their frigidness, a foreshadowing of the winter to come.

With no other distractions, I let myself sink into the rain, into the noise.  I notice subtleties about the day. It's fresh scent and the dampness of the air around me.

I'm reminded of all the good the rain brings.
How plentiful it is this time of year.

The streams are rushing now.
The valleys splashing in mud.
The mountain tops getting their first blanket of crisp white snow.

It makes me happy to know there is an ample amount to go around.

Everything is prospering in it's glory.

And I think to myself, what a life it is to have and abundance of resources.
Enough to prosper, but not in excess.

Enough to grow into your fullest, but not enough to spoil on the riches.

What would the world be like?
Would we see less loss?
Less heartache?

Maybe I'll know one day, but for now, I'll settle for a good rain, and the rest of my tea.

These one of a kind items are available in the here until sold.
